International Roma Integration through Sport is a transnational project fighting traditional and new anti-Roma stereotypes, whose persistence and diffusion are at the roots of discriminatory actions against Roma people.

The IRIS partners meeting in Plovdiv, Bulgaria 10-11.11.2011 gathered together 8 partners, ISCA among them, to discuss project progress and an action plan for 2012. The project was officially launched on 21.02.2011 in Italy during the kick off meeting hosted by the leading partner UISP Settimo Ciriè.

The round table with the participation of stakeholders highlighted the need of national and European policies for Roma integration. Media showed a very high interest in the event, which happened one month after protests and acts of violence against the Roma in Plovdiv. “Roma integration is possible and it should start with Roma kids” said Lucia Veleva, chairperson of Courage Foundation, the Bulgarian IRIS partner, during DNES talk show of NBT TV program. “Sport is a powerful integration tool that overcomes language, religious and ethnic barriers, and good practices should be transferred in schools, sports and civil society organizations.”

Next transnational events are a round table in Suceava, Romania in May 2012 and a seminar and tournament with more than 100 Roma and non Roma kids in Italy in June 2012. Follow IRIS activities on Facebook “IRIS – International Roma Integration through Sport”.
