Balkan Youth and Sport Forum 2009

Youth leaders in Balkan make their voice heard with the Balkan Youth & Sport Forum declaration!

From September 7-13, more than 40 youth NGO representatives from 10 nations throughout the Balkan region participated in the 1st ever ISCA organized Balkan Youth and Sport Forum. Held near the historic city of Sarajevo in Bosnia Herzegovina, the Forum provided those youth leaders present with the opportunity to step away from their daily demands, to network with their peers across the region, and learn from each other to present their ideas of a stronger structure for youth in a declaration for inspiration to decision makers.  With its focus on convening diverse youth leaders around areas of common interest, the Forum underscored that institutions in the region must provide opportunities for dialogue, reflection, and shared action among youth NGOs throughout the region.

The six-day event comprised of plenary sessions, small group work, and training workshops, centred around three key themes:
•    Youth participation,
•    Democratic citizenship and
•    Non-formal education through sport.

Following four days of case study presentations and intensive dialogue, participants presented their perspectives around each of the Forum’s three core themes to a panel of political representatives from the region, alongside ISCA president Mogens Kirkeby. “This event tells us that there is much more that unifies Balkan youth than sets you apart” stated Mogens Kirkeby in the panel debate, and was followed by Serbian Sport for All president Milorad Perisic, who underscored the importance of youth taking its own action to make a change: “We can as politicians always use the inspiration that youth gives us, and with the declaration we have a starting point to discuss how the future can be improved for youth involved in NGOs” adding that “It is important that you as potential leaders of the future set the good example, starting by implementing good practices on local level to show us politicians how your ideas can create a stronger and more democratic tomorrow”.
On this note from Milorad Persisic, the participants used the last two days of the forum to create specific project ideas, with the intend to strengthen the collaboration of youth in the Balkan region and promoting the core key themes of the forum. Since the ending of the forum, some project groups have continued its to ensure that the realization of the ideas will happen.

The BYSF 2009 was organized together with local member organizations “Let's be active” and “Under the same sun”.
